Safety Strategies
This course will discuss safety issues related to the care and protection of children with varying disabilities. We will compare and discuss safety devices, identification methods, locks, latches and other means of child proofing your home, along with modern technology available to keep your child safe. Special safety concerns for the non-verbal child will be discussed. We will go over how to teach and prepare your disabled child for emergencies should they arise. Emergency situations will be considered along with methods that can be used to alert authorities or family of your child’s condition in the event they are left in their care. Tips and ideas from research in the field of child protection will be discussed and shared in an open format of discussion.
Objectives:
- To discuss methods of keeping disabled children safe in public and in their home environment.
- To discuss dangers and/or situations to consider when developing a safety plan.
- To compare and discuss safety devices to meet your child’s specific needs.
- To discuss current technologies and how they can benefit the care of a disabled child.
- To discuss what to do in the event of an emergency and the importance of having a safety plan in place.
Activities:
The workshop will be conducted with a power point presentation with accompanying hand-outs.

A safety plan will be discussed along with demonstration of useful safety products.
Presenter:
Tracey McKoy is the mother of a 9 year old autistic son. She has researched safety devices and identification methods for her own child who is primarily non-verbal. She has research, tips and advice to share from her own experience dealing with her son’s disability.
